Government grants millions to chicken AI

The UK government has awarded a £2.6 million grant to an AI system aimed at improving efficiency on egg farms.

The technology, which analyzes data from farm sensors—including hen vocalizations—is designed to detect early signs of stress or illness in birds, alerting farmers in real-time.

Developed collaboratively by Oxford-based FAI Farms, The Lakes Free Range Egg Company in Cumbria, and Newcastle University, the system is called Flockwise (Facilitating Learning Opportunities, Cultivating Knowledge and Welfare through Integrated Sensing and Expertise).

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is funding a three-year trial, expecting the system to enhance animal welfare and eventually help reduce egg prices for consumers.

FAI Farms noted that Flockwise builds on its existing BirdBox system, which already tracks environmental conditions, equipment performance, feed data, and egg quality.

Defra said the new technology could help hens live longer, healthier lives—benefiting the environment by lowering the carbon footprint of egg production.

If rolled out nationally, the project could increase egg production by up to 1.7 billion annually and boost farmer incomes by an estimated £280 million, according to Defra.

Environment Secretary Steve Reed said the investment in agricultural technology is making British farms more productive and profitable, with potential savings passed on to consumers.

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle praised the project as a strong example of innovation driving food security and keeping British farming at the cutting edge.
